On a hot day in Febuary 2010. I discovered there was this festival going on in Elgin, IL in early May 2010. I was going to be traveling around North America for 6 weeks at the time. My plan was to go visit Lake Placid in New York State.
When I found out there was going to be "Melodic Rock Festival 2" with a line up of Danger Danger, Y&T, Trixter, Ted Poley, Jimi Jamison and Winger, I shat myself. My mate Dave Balfour told me "FUCK THE LAKE, GO TO THIS INSTEAD"
I was already booked to see Overkill in New York on the 1st May 2010. So I had to settle with seeing Winger, Trixter, Ted Poley and Jimi Jamison.
Visiting Melodic Rock Festival 2 was emotional in some ways. Less than a year after this festival Y&T bassist Phil Kennemore would scumble to Lung Cancer, 4 years later Jimi Jamison had died of a Heart Attack and within a period of 9 months and a day, original Y&T members Leonard Haze and Joey Alves would die, leaving Dave Meniketti as the only surving member of Y&T
I do regret not going to the first day of Melodic Rock Fest, because I missed out on seeing Danger Danger & Y&T. I would end up seeing Overkill in Sydney that same year and I also saw Ted Poley when he came to Oz in November 2010.
Every year Y&T has been booked to do a shitload of shows up and down the UK. They were always playing: London, Southampton, Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester, Dublin, Belfast you name it!
I was planning on flying back to the UK in October 2016 so I could see Y&T but I really wanted to see my mates in Bastardizer and Hellbringer before I moved back over. I also just didn't want to sit on another 12 hour flight from Hanoi to London.
Y&T were coming back to the UK twice in 2017. They played some festival in Wales around July this year before doing another tour in October. I decided I would go see Y&T in Cambridge. I wanted to catch up with my cousin Lesley and find out about her travels to Guernsey.
I left London on the train at 2.30pm after finishing work at 1.30pm It takes and hour and a half to get up to Cambridge. I would reccomend you get the train up to Cambridge as its only £7 each way (book in advance!)
I got to Cambridge in the afternoon, drove around town with Lesley before having TEA at her house. Lesley is a really lovely cousin whom I only just met this year. Her Mother emigrated from New Zealand in 1939 and ended living in London and marrying an English man.
I wasn't that keen on seeing the support band "BURNT OUT WRECK". I caught the end of their set as they played this song "Pulling it Off".
Apologies that I was late guys, but "BURNT OUT WRECK" is a really awesome band. Go check them out here https://www.burntoutwreck.com/
Y&T started up the show with "Black Tiger" off their 1982 album. Noises of wild life was blaring over the PA as Y&T started 2 hours of rocking music.
"Lipstick and Leather" off 1984 "in Rock We Trust". I had this LP back in 1984 and it was one of the bands biggest selling albums. I mean this band never really did have a US TOP 40 hit. but hey they were giants of Rock in Europe.#
Dave welcomes us to the show. He tells us all that we are in for 2 hours of music. It was their first gig in the UK on their European tour.
"Straight Thru the Heart" off 1983 album "Mean Streak" I used to have this album on my Ipod in 2010. It was pretty good to hear this live.
Throughout the guitar changes, there roadie would be dressed up in rad costumes. One time he came out wearing a Shiek outfit as he was referring to Frank Zappa's "Sheik Yerbouti" record. Later on in the show the roadie was playing with HAND PUPPETS on the side of the stage. Boy this roadie makes Jim Henson look like shit! Great work Rolf Pfau
"Dirty Girl" off 1981 "Earthshaker" and then "Eyes of a Stranger" off 1987 "Contagious". I came to hear "Mean Steak" and thats what they played!, This song reminds me that I sometimes do spend my money so FAST than I never see the GREEN.
Well living on my own is expensive and its cost me £25 for 2 hours of rock music, plus £14 return train fare. But I don't really give a shit.
Dave started playing some of his SOLO material. I never really knew that he was a solo artist on his own. He played "Lay Me Down" & "Storm"
Dave Meniketti is one of the best guiatrist and singers of all time. I mean its kinda hard to do both at once, but HEY! thats all about ROCK & ROLL!
Before Y&T started playing "Winds of Change", Dave dedicated this performance to his brothers Joey, Leonard and Phil who have passed away in the past 6 years. Dave wants to keep going on even with 3 new guys to fill their shoes.
"Masters and Slaves" off 1984 "In Rock We Trust". I haven't listened to this album in many years..
When Y&T started playing "I Believe in You" off 1981 "EARTHSHAKER" I remember first hearing this song on their 1985 live album "Open Fire" the album cover with all those cigarette lighters made me realize they were hear for the POWER BALLARD.
I don't smoke so I just turned on the flashlight on my phone. I started waiving it around as I recorded the band on my cameras
I started getting emotional during this song. It made me think of women in Sydney that I had gotten with in the last few years and how they were so much supportive of me that a prick cousin from New Zealand or a snob relative.
If you had ever gotten into a FRIENDS WITH BENNEFITS with a lady, then she may think your the world when others think
Your phony friends, they all counsel you
the things they say-oh baby
you know aren't true, know aren't true
cause even though I've been away
for such a long time
Just remember baby, you remember baby
when you here me say I'm telling you
So in hindsight I don't really give a fuck if nobody related to me by blood isn't supportive of me in living in London or emigrating to Sweden or travelling to Suriname. You will never get to do the things I do cause your a RETARD and the stupid things you do in life make you a loser.
I was also thinking about past FLARES. Maybe someday I will return to Sydney and have a fling with that lady called CJ as she was the chick I lost my virginity with. Or I could just jump into bed with those NORTH Shore flares!
It was exciting to hear "Summertime Girls" but during the song Dave was singing some parts differently than on record. Hes a bloody good musican and hes been doing his trade for nearly 50 years.
It was great to hear"Barroom Boogie"! Its a killer track off "Black Tiger"
"Squeeze" another great song off EARTHSHAKER!
"I'm Coming Home" off their 2010 album FACEMELTER. They made a great music video for this song back then. Its a sad song to me as its one of Phil's last recording with the band before he died.
The Encore was of three classic songs
"Midnight in Tokyo" off 1983 "Mean Steak.
"Rescue Me" off "EARTHSHAKER"
The final song of the night was "FOREVER" it was the song everyone had came to hear. This is one of my top 5 favourite Y&T songs.
At the end of "FOREVER" the band took a bow and got a roar of applaure and cheers. I missed out on getting one of Dave picks, but I brought 4 of them off their German merch manager.
I was hoping to get Dave wife & manager Jill to sign my book, but security told us all to leave. I could have waited a while to meet the band AFTERWOODS, but I needed to get back to my cousins house in Cambridge.
I can't wait for the next Y&T album and if I am still living in the UK I will see them again.
