Unfortunately the Typhoid Vaccine only lasts for 3 years. So every 3 years you need to be vaccinated again against Typhoid and every 10 years for Hep A, Hep B, Yellow Fever and Tetanus
If you are traveling to continent such as: Central America, South America, Africa and some parts of Asia, its extremely important that you get vaccinated against Hep A/B, Typhoid, Polio and Tetanus. It is mandatory to get a Yellow Fever vaccination 6 weeks before entering South America or Africa. You will need to show an immigration or health official your Yellow Fever Certificate or risked being denied entry or forced to be given the yellow fever vaccine. When you leave a Yellow Fever you will need to show your certificate to get into your next destination.
Please note: What i am about to tell you isn't a substitute from seeing your Doctor. Your GP will decided what vaccines you can have and not everyone can have the yellow fever vaccine.
Hepatitis A is a disease of the liver. It is spread through eating or drinking food that have came in contact with feces. To be clear from Hep A you will need to have two vaccines between 6 months. So i had my first Hep A Vaccines Feb 2nd 2011, i had to wait until August 2nd 2011 to have my 2nd dose.
Hepatitis B is a disease that also attacks the liver. Unlike Hep A, it is spread by sexual contact with people that are infected with Hep B. You need to have 3 vaccines (1 a month) to be fully protected from HEP B.
Typhoid like HEP A is also contracted by eating or drinking soiled food. You only need one vaccine every 3 years to protect yourself from Typhoid. Typhoid Mary worked as a cook and gave hundreds of people in New York Typhoid.
Yellow Fever is passed on from Mosquito bites from the Yellow fever Mosquito. These types of mozzies can be found in Africa and most of Northern South America. You need to have a Yellow Fever injection once every 10 years.
Tetanus. if you cut yourself on something sharp and rusty, chances are you will need a tetanus shot to stop you from developing tetanus. A Tetanus shot lasts for 10 years and its best to get one once every 10 years to stay healthy.
Polio We are all vaccinated against Polio when we are babies and aged 5 but as growing adult we do need a Polio booster every 10 years. If your going to travel to India or Africa or anywhere that had a Polio epidemic, GET VACCINATED
Also please be aware that vaccines don't get straight to work. It takes about 6 weeks for the vaccines to fully adapt itself to your immune system. So if your going to Brazil for the World Cup next month, you should have already had a Yellow Fever vaccine before you got your tickets.
Anyway to stay healthy on the road, always wash your hands and be using hand sanitizer, and only eat piping hot food. If you can't peel it don't eat it. Please also don't eat a prawn salad in a third world nation. That always ends up like a disaster
