After I moved to UK in 2015 I started seeing allot more female fronted rock bands in the UK. This was something I wasn't used to in Sydney. Because whenever I saw a woman on stage she was either a Bassist, a Keyboardist or even a guitarist
So here comes the low down on what women rock my world!
1. Lee Aaron
Lee Aaron is the first thing on the tip of my tongue when someone asked me who is my favourite female singer. I admire her 1982-1990 Era that included awesome tracks such as "Metal Queen", "Powerline", "Lady of the Darkest Night".
But her Jazz days were kinda awful to some fans and awesome for lovers of Jazz!
I had the pleasure of seeing Lee Aaron in Camden during July 2017. It was a fucking awesome concert and I nearly got hit in the head with her swinging mic.
It was 2007, Heavy Metal was growing in me but I was still spinning Kyle's stupid "X" on my CD player. Then one night in Sydney I discovered this band called HEART. They had two #1 hits in America with "Alone" and "These Dreams".
Heart had filled in a void in life 2 years after I stopped listening to Olivia and started playing allot more Metallica. Heart lead the way for other women in Rock music and influenced allot of ladies in Metal!
May 2010, I travelled to Phoenix AZ from my apartment in New York city to see Heart live. It was an awesome concert and the lovely thing about it was it became my #1 Non Heavy Metal concert. I shook hands with Ann and Nancy after the show. In the Taxi ride home I raved about Heart, Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar and fucking Olivia Newton-John!
Man that Mexican-American Taxi driver knew what was on my ipod! I told him "YOU CAN STILL ROCK IN AMERICA"
In July 2017 i travelled to Bristol for one night. It was to give my friend Arthur a birthday card and to see 4 bands on stage: NARDA NARDA, FLOWERPOT, JOANOVARC and Dorja
Fronting the band Dorja was none other than the lovely Aiym Almas. She was born in Almaty Kazakhstan, she studied in the UK and now lives in Los Angeles
I have never met anyone from Central Asia, at at the time in my life I hadn't visited a single Stan country.
Aiym Almas had such a powerful voice. She ain't no pop star but she really does remind me of what came before her. When I went to Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan my hostel receptionist told me that AIYM MEANS Queen in Kazakh culture.
Months after my trip to Kazakhstan I saw Aiym at a Dorja gig in London. We talked over Kazakhstan culture and she told me that her name means Queen and Moon
When She was singing "Far Gone" that night I couldn't help but grasp the moment by singing along and crying at the same time
"TAKE ME, BREAK ME AS I AM, I'M NOT LEAVING!"
So maybe Doro doesn't have an album called METAL QUEEN. She is a Queen of Metal if you ask me! Being the front lady of Warlock she took this one German band to new heights. I owned all 4 Warlock albums on vinyl.
Even after the disbandment of Warlock and the loss of name (that she won back). Doro surged on in her Solo career. She is one hot Woman who makes Single men carry signs around saying DORO = MILF POWER when Doro takes the stage at Hellfest (even though shes not a Mum)
I saw Doro at Hellfest in 2011.
So Kim Wilde doesn't play a guitar on stage? So what! She comes from a family of rockers. Her brother and his daughter are on stage with her, she allows a General Admission audience and shes got a huge respect for HEAVY METAL
I first heard Kim Wilde in 1993 and it took me 25 years to see her live in Camden during 2018.
Dolly Daggerz of Tokyo Taboo is one amazing, high pitch singing, colourful musician. She and her husband Mike know how to perform on stage. All of the songs she write with Mike really does pull strings, but when she tells you all to SIT THE FUCK DOWN during "DROWNING" you better sit down and look at the stage!
Dolly is an awesome friend of mine. She like Wendy O Williams of my generation.
I first discovered a woman called Lauren Tate during my first stint in London. She got up on stage with 2 other guys and Becky Baldwin (amazing bassist) to front her band HANDS OFF GRETEL. She was dressed like Dorothy from Wizzard of OZ and had a mean fender guitar around her neck
Lauren Tate is a woman who will bring you off your feet and yelling your head off for more. I had then pleasure of meeting Lauren after a H.O.G X-mas gig in 2017.
She is such a beautiful person (and plays a good witch). She refused to be signed by a major label, she records music in her bedroom, she paints her own albums cover, she has 2 colours in her hair and for being age 21 Lauren Tate is doing stuff most pop stars could never do.
It was June 2017, I had just moved to London. I went to Big Red in the City to enjoy some sliders with my pal Arthur and some rock music.
Opening up for JoanovAc was Bristol punk rockers IDestroy. Bec Jeevson on Guitar, Becky Baldwin (whom has now left the band) on bass and Jenn Haneef on drums.
Idestroy really does kick out the jams, but its their lyrical fore points that really do wow me hard. When I hear about Bec wanting to destroy everything, it reminds me of the time I destroyed everyone of my photo from New Zealand as I couldn't bear to look back on these dimwits
Not only is Bec an amazing guitarist, she also plays the Keyboard!
I must also add that Jen Haneef on drums really does have a wicked sense of humour. Go watch IDestroy "Vanity Loves Me" video. Shes dresses like cat without any bullshit filters that most fools use on snap chat these days!
I saw Chloe fronting the band Sister Shotgun when I first lived in Birmingham. She is a very attractive young lady who likes to get off the stage to sing and dance with everyone in the front row. In 30 years in Australia, I have never see a woman get off the stage and start dancing with people headbanging in the front row!
She fronts the band JoanovArc. Sings her heart out, plays the bass with her fingers and is one lovely bassits frontwoman. Her sister Shelly also sings well and so does Laura.
You really got to see J.O.A live sometime in the future if you are in England, Israel, Europe or Japan.
I've been lucky to see this band Flowerpot a few times in my UK. Steph gets on stage she prowls around it like Bruce Dickson, hits high notes, gets on her knees to yell and is a really strong front woman.
You will see allot of Steph (Rexie) these days on Social Media as shes very busy lady with her Swords of Cygnus Medievil fighting competitions and encouraging others to stay fit.
The reason I have listed 11 Women ahead of Olivia is because they have what Newton-John hardly makes anymore.... ROCK MUSIC!
Yes as a straight Metalhead, I am proud to call myself an Alternative Olivia fan. I will only listen to Olivia Newton-John music from 1978-1988.
Olivia was DETHRONED in the mid 80's thanks to dimwit pop stars Madonna and Kylie. These 2 moron's basically pushed the lady from Cambridge into the pit of hell and ONJ never ever had another hit single.
I got to see Olivia at the Sydney Opera House in 2012, this also gave me the chance to witness Andy Timmons live. I spent most of that night yelling out "Danger Danger" and falling asleep.
That Opera House concert was like one of the top 5 NON HEAVY METAL concerts I ever went to. Heart had a better concert than Olivia but that's because they influence more women in Metal than Olivia does.
Somedays I do wish Olivia fired that boring orchestra and maybe got the rest of Danger Danger back together. Ted Poley would be a better backing vocalist than that fat guy called Steve
I went to hang out with my mates Arthur and Doug one night in Sheppard Bush. On stage was a young lady with a guitar. Her name was Gill Montgomery and shes fronts a band The Ammorettes
I loved the way how Gill was playing all these hard rock songs on an acousitc guitar. But sometime I just wish I cleared my schedules and saw this band
This counts on a technicality. I have never seen Stevie Nicks on stage in my life BUT I got to listen to Stevie Nicks while I worked at a Fleetwood Mac concert in 2015.
Stevie Nicks music stopped me from killing myself in December 2008. That Bella Donna record was one of my favourite non metal records I ever owned. I do hope to see her live someday in the near future
