America at the time was going through a racial phase that died down with the cival rights movements, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and the goal was achieve as African Americas finnaly got equal rights in their own country.
Nat Nakasa was persecuted in his own country of birth just for the colour of his skin. The racist Boer Authorities only gave him an exit permit upon relinqueshing his South African nationality. They didnt give Nat a passport because his writing express hatred towards Aparthied. He was given a Tanzanian travel document so he could get to America
Nat Nakasa was a writer that gave influence to a generation of Africans and African Americans to stand up and fight the power.
But new life's are never that happy. The FBI were going after him just for being a Black South African that wanted freedom in America. There was no way back into South Africa nor way there a way out.
Nat Nakasa leapt to his death on the 14th July 1965. Aged only 28. For the next 49 years Nats grave was located at the Famous Ferncliff Cemetery. At the time of his death the South African government didn't want to accept the remains of coloured citizen because it seems like they pushed a 2nd class citizen out of the country and they would want nothing to do with his death.
His grave was located not far from Malcolm X resting place. It just seem like an honour to have two civil rights heroes resting near each other.
20 years after the end of apartheid in South Africa Nat Nakasa remains were exhumed from New York and flown back to the motherland. He was reburied with full honours as his citizenship was reinstated.
