One band that really stuck out to me was Dark Angel! They came from Los Angeles forming in the early 80's. It was quiet odd for a Thrash band to come out of LA because all Los Angeles was about is HAIR METAL!
Yes Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer were born within driving distance from L.A but all of a suddern Metallica moved up to San Fransisco. Slayer was from Huntington Beach too.
When I was 24 I got to meet Gene Hoglan at a Fear Factory in store signing in Utopia Record. I didn't really give a SHIT that he was drumming for Fear Factory. I just wanted him to sign my DARK ANGEL "Leave Scars" album I brought back in 2008 and that's what he did.
I also thought it was ODD that Dark Angel were reforming, because
1) Its said on Wikipedia that the lead singer Ron had an spine injury in 2005. If Ron was to singing again, he would lose his voice!
Around the end of 2017, my good mate MIKE RYAN shared a poster of a LORD OF THE LANDS festival that happens every APRIL! Last year they had AUTOPSY headlining, in 2018 they put DARK ANGEL on the top of the bill.
At first I kinda thought it was slack that Dark Angel would fly from LA to UK to do one show in Glagow (A city I really dislike!) and not perform anywhere else. I mean For Fuck Sake, every metal band that comes to the UK always tends to play London!
Around Febuary 2018, I was in talks of visiting my cousin on weekend in Aberdeen. Shes been there for a couple of years now and I haven't visited her since I moved back to the UK in November 2016.
She never comes down to London and I respect that. She looks after her family while her hubby works
I was skeptical of paying £40 just to see LANWMOWER DETH and DARK ANGEL! If either band were to play London, it would be under £25. I never knew if I was going to see Dark Angel again. I shot the bullet and paid up.
I left work on Friday night to drink at the pub and say goodbye to my friend Alex who was moving back to Poland for sometime. Shes been a cool chick to hang out with in North London.
I got on the bus and went north to Scotland. Leaving at 11.45pm and arriving at 9.30am. I got off in Glasgow to enjoy a GREGS breakfast bap before walking to the venue.
After grabbing my ticket, storing my bag in the cloak room. I went into the Ballroom to enjoy some Lawnmower Deth. I have always wanted to see this band live as they are a bunch of funny fuckers. Lawnmower Deth has even had the balls to perform with KIM WILDE and even release an ANTI X-MAS SONG " F U KRISMAS" last December!
Lawnmower Death set involved clowns on stage throwing out balloons and us Metalheads pelting them at Lawnmower Deth for fun. It was hilarious. The band is a combination of COMEDY ROCK and Thrash Metal
The 2nd band of the day was Vallenfyre. I thought they were really good and I was quiet Surprised it was a SIDE PROJECT of the guitarist in Paradise Lost. But then all of a sudden they announce their disbandment on stage as they said it was their first and last gig in Glasgow.
I went back into the city to check into my hostel at 2pm and sleep till 7.30pm. At 8pm I got up and left the hostel. I waited 30 minutes for a stupid bus that never came! So I walked all the way to venue to see Dark Angel.
I made sure I got down to the front barrier as allot of people did fuck off after seeing their favorite band!
Dark Angel played material covering all four of its albums! Around 11pm there was a power outage on stage. Ron was joking that Dark Angel like to BLOWN stuff up on stage because the power had gone!
Gene Hoglan said from behind the kit "I'm Gene Holgan and I'm going to play you some drums as I don't need electricity. Gene began to do an amazing solo along with a drum cover of RUSH YYZ
It had been at least 8 years since I last listend to Dark Angel. I was very proud of myself that I got to see Dark Angel live in concert. I remember writing on my facebook profile that seeing Dark Angel was allot better than 1 Olivia concert, 3 Kylie concerts, flipping burgers at Madonna for 7 hours and serving WINE at Fleetwood Mac!
I went back to my hostel before I had to walk to the bus station at 3am to get the only cheap bus to Aberdeen today. By the end of the weekend i was so Happy I saw my cousin Lisa in Scotland, saw Dark Angel and had a weekend off work"
