Ron Royce the master of the 4 & 8 string bass stood behind the microphone and fronted the band for its 13 year existence. With three talented musicians of Ron, Marky and Tommy the band release a string of record that are well praised, loved, inspired and admired by fans of Thrash and Progressive Metal.
R.I.P, Punishment for Decadence, No More Color, Mental Vortex and Grin should be in the record collection of and Thrash Metal or Prog metal fan.
Coroner was put to rest in 1996 as the band members moved on to different jobs and bands. It was a shame they broke up as they didn't get the mainstream success they were hoping for. In a space of 15 nearly every Coroner fan on earth wanted a damn reunion. But after 15 years of dead silence Coroner emerged from their tomb to play a set of festivals in 2011.
The biggest Coroner fan i have even known is James Lewis (Hellbringer, ex Teratornis). I have been friends with him for 4 years and i always hoped that one day he would get to see Coroner as he always was wearing a Coroner shirt nearly every time i saw him.
Unfortunately i got to see Coroner in 2011 Hellfest. But James would always hope they would come to Australia so it would save himself a trip to Europe.
I went to see Coroner at Hellfest that year. But i feel asleep half way through their set and dragged myself to bed. But i was glad i saw them. I promised myself that i would go see Coroner if they ever came to Sydney.
Now I don't really see overseas bands more than once and i wasn't really planning on going to see Coroner last night cause i thought to myself: "Well if I am moving to Europe in the next 12 months or so i might as well go see them in Switzerland for 30 CHF." But then i found out 30 CHF buys 50 AUD so it make sense. Plus its about $30-40 AUD for a DORM BED in Switzerland.
One of my friend said it cost more to see Coroner in Switzerland because of the flight. Well so what, I am an EU, i don't have to come back to Australia at all. But if you do want to live in Europe it is allot cheaper to see Metal bands over there.
I brought my ticket at 3pm yesterday and took the bus into the city and had to walk a long distance to be at Sydney University Manning Bar.
The first band on at the night was The Devil Himself. That was the first time seeing that band, as i have never heard of them. Their set was good and I'm sure it wont be the last time i see them
The lineup of BASTARDIZER consist of Billy Morgan on Guitar Jackson King (Ex Teratornis) on Drums, Chris Beesley on Vokills and Ray McGill (Bane of Isildur/Metal) on Bass. Unfortunate Ray was oversea so there was a fill in bassist for the band. James Lewis did a few live gigs for the band as a bass player before focusing on Hellbringer.
BASTARDIZER setlist was the following:
Bastards, Bullets, Bitches & Beer
Bathory & Lust
Enforcers of Evil
Bareback In Brazil
Pentagram of Pleasure
To me I'm really glad: Bill, Jackson, Ray & Chris have put together this band as BASTARDIZER are doing greater things than what Teratornis originally did years ago. BASTARDIZER is a new breed of Blackened Thrash Metal and you can easily find that sound if you listen to the earliest records and demos of Sodom, Kreator, Destruction or the first wave of Black Metal.
Billy Morgan is an awesome mate of mine. Hes got the hair of Dee Snider and the guitar of Iommi and that man has seen allot more Metal than i have in my 9 years of being a Metalhead.
Jackson King is a dynamite on drums. Watching old Teratornis video on youtube reminds me of his talents back int he last few years
Chris is fucking legend on lead Vokills. The inverted crucifix hanging off the microphone is a big FUCK YOU to relgion. Don't ever change man.
Legendary Manager Dave Balfour discovered these guys in 2011 and they have played many gigs for him and have been able to go oversea and kick arse in Europe.
I am very certain there will be a new album out soon.
Coroner opened with "Golden Cashmere Sleeper part 1" from their self titled greatest hits album.
"Internal conflict" & "Serpent Moves" off the Grin record. Grin was the last full LP Coroner made in 1993. It was a step away from Thrash but a good foot towards Progressive Metal.
It was great to hear "Son Of Lilith" as it has some technical guitar work on that album with killer rifts. The same can b said for "Divine Step" I always found the intro of STRAIGHT LINE played by Reiz Trigger as mind blowing. Allot more moshing and crowd surfer were happening during that song.
Semtex Revolution was all about rvolutions and shit that has been going on recently;
Ron gave a brief dedication to "The Angels front man Doc Neeson passing. before ripping into "Status: Still Thinking". I had no idea there was going to be a majority of songs from GRIN.
The whale talking made the intro to "Metamorphosis" some guy jumped the barrier and did a fucking stage dive.
The Lethargic Age. Another song off Grin. If you ask me Grin is a record that Dream Theater could have made but Coroner were doing their chops longer than DT.
"Gliding Above While Being Below" its a pretty good instrumental stoner song and I'm sure my stoner friends in Tehran would agree with me. It even features audio samples off the movie Altered States.
It was time to turn it to 11 with "Masked Jackal" one of the first music videos the band made. The crowd of under 1000 went ballistic for Coroner. Its the song the Thrashers wanted to hear. Its when i started getting all these goosebumps feeling. I was staring at my friend James Lewis as i was signing to him "DREAM ACOMPLISHED"
Ron stated that this was the last song for the night. It waas the tile track to the last album GRIN this one is "Grin (Nails Hurt)". As the song was playing and the lights were flashing i had tears in my eyes. Coroner had made a grown man cry. I could p picture myself walking from Saint-Louis in France across the border and into Basil to earn a decent Swiss Franc as a waiter.
I started chanting Buddhist chants as i raised my hands in the air to feel the power and influence of Coroner. I was telling myself: Birmingham is near, you will find that mature girlfriend, you will travel more than anyone else, lose the hatred that is in your New Zealand family. I yelled out loud ""I HATE THE IDIOTS IN MY MUMS FAMILY!":as the curse of the last 5 years with that shitty family was put to rest.
The machine gun went off as that was the end of the Coroner set. we all started chanting CORONER untill the band came back on the stage and ripped into the opening song off RIP "Reborn Through Hate"
RIP will always go down as a classic album in any Metalhead. Harris Johns did as brilliant job on that record like has done so many times in his career. I really id feel like i was reborn through hate.
"Die By My Hand" was the last song of the night. Finally a track off "No more Color". In all its glory Coroner has played a decent set off all 5 record. But its a shame not to hear "Skeleton on your Shoulder" or allot more songs off RIP.
What does the future hold for Coroner? Well first of all its a shame Markey isn't behind the kit, he played on all album but i just think there are time Metal Musician get sick of their trade. After Coroner split up in 1996 Ron became a painter/electrical because there was hardly any money in Thrash Metal.
I would like to see Markey get back behind the kit and Coroner make another record of New technical Progressive Thrash Metal after 19 years of absence.
As for me? Maybe ill go see Coroner once i move over to Europe
