In the last few years in Australia Channel 7 has produced TV movies focusing on the lifes of Peter Allen, INXS. But in hine sight there has been so many movies made about various bands and artists that have gone before our time.
I remember watching HYSTERIA THE DEF LEPPARD STORY and being amazed that some actor had the balls to recreate Rick Allen losing an arm!
There is movies out there about: Beach Boys, Queen, The Four Seasons, NWA and the Runaways.
So when I read online that Delta Goodrem was set to PLAY Olivia Newton-John in a telemovie about her life. I felt like someone had strapped a rocket onto me and I was blasted off into space. When you hire a proper singer to recreate another Singers life in a movie, its not going to be a shitty musical.
I had a friend of mine tell me that she wished Chloe Lattanzi (Olivia's daughter) would portray her Mum. I thought Kylie could have done a good job or Lzzy Hale, Cristina Scabbia or Angela Gossow could have portrayed Olivia Newton-John and sang some cleans vocals.
So one day in London I called my Father up and I told him about this TV Movie thats coming out. My father had admired Olivia all of his life, even though he was married to a woman who fucking dispised her.
My Dad says "I am going to tape it down on a USB and mail it to your address in London". So we both waited for this thing to come on air in Australia.
I have been away from Australia for nearly 2 years, I don't miss TV shows or whats on the idiot box! But if someone is going to make a movie about a woman who taught me the difference between real music and shit music then I got see this!
While I was in Iceland my father was ringing me, He called me up to tell me how much he loves me. Dad also said that Delta Goodrem covered Olivia songs better than the original.
So I watched the silly trailer and found someone uploading tracks to youtube. When I heard Delta cover PHYSICAL. I THOUGHT WOW THESE GUITAR PARTS ARE ALLOT MEANER THAN STEVE LUKATHER!
If you want to wow me, pick up a guitar and shred. Don't just autotune it or protools it!
Yes its awesome to go to a record shop in America and pick up some Eric Clapton, Linda Ronstadt, and Stevie Nicks records to go with your Winger, Y&T and Queensryche records.
All of a suddern 13th May came around. Part one was aired in Australia. I couldn't watch this show on 7plus because of GEO BLOCKING on their website.
After the episode aired my father called me to say that Morgan Griffin was fantasic portraying a young Olivia but then it was stunning when Delta took the microphone to sing "I Honestly Love you"
The 2nd part aired in Australia 7 days later. In that time I had gone out to see Foreigner in London. A week later I was doing a spoken word piece in London about being an ALTERNATIVE OLIVIA FAN.
I was Kinda sad this USB stick didn't arrive before I left. I don't understand how I sent a letter to my Uncle in Middlesbrough and it only took 4 days. Nobody was uploading the movie to YouTube and getting VPN were too problematic.
One day in Sweden I got an email from my friend. He told my USB stick had arrived in London and he would keep it safe.
I came back to London in August to collect it.
I had very high hopes to watch this movie. Some of the stuff my Dad recorded didn't show on my laptop, So I had to install a player
Part 1: Was all about Olivia winning on Sing Sing Sing, recording her 1st single in the UK, touring with Pat Carol (before Pat got deported), dating Bruce Welch, working with John Farrar, recording "I Honestly Love you" and acting in Grease.
Because my father had started and stopped recording during AD breaks some parts of the film weren't playing properly. So I though, stuff part 1, I'll import the DVD from Australia.
I was too excited about Part 2 because I had hoped it would focus on my favourite Olivia era 1978-1985.
Part2: Filming Xanadu, recording Physical, opening Koala Blue with Pat Farrah, dealing with stalker Michael Perry, marrying Matt Lattanzi, birth of Chloe, death of Colette Chuda, Colapse of Koala Blue, Death of her father, Breast Cancer battle, divorcing Matt, meeting Patrick, Death of her mother, the disaperance of Patrick and that Opera House concert of 2006.
Now I might have been the last person IN Australia to see this film, but I don't live there any more and only 300-700k people in Australia watched this on TV when it was on. So my review might come a bit late or light years away. But in hinesight.
IT WAS A COMPLETE JOKE! Full of Negative shit and skipping on the brighter parts of Olivia's life that die hard ONJ fanatics know so well.
In STRAIGHT OUT OF COMPTON, You had to have EAZY E dying of AIDS, you couldn't skip that part. His death may have killed off a NWA reunion. But that movie had so much fun parts to resemble the years of NWA being groundbreaking in bullshit RAP MUSIC.
Death is a sad part in a movie, so are illness and disappearances. Don't make 1 moment cut into a film for 10 minutes.
THINGS THOSE STUPID SCREEN WRITERS MISSED OUT ON
No footage in CAMBRIDGE.
For fuck sake! Ask any Olivia fan on any 193 UN members of the world and they will tell you that woman was born in Cambridge to a Welsh father (who hunted Nazi's) and a German Jewish Mother (who fled the Nazi's). Nothing was mention on Cambridge, not even how the Newton-John's came to Melbourne by boat in 1954.
Pat moans to Olivia (before being deported) because Olivia's father was born in the UK.
Bryn Newton-John was Welshman and his daughter was an English girl. A British Birthright gave Olivia the chance to go back to the UK after many years in Australia and further a career as a British Citizen/naturalised Australian without any bullshit most people born in Australia have had to deal with in the last 50 years in London!
Pat Carol went on to marry an Australian Man (John Farrar) and live in the United States where Sam Farrar of Maroon 5 was born
"I Honestly Love You"
Released in 1974 not 1973! "Let Me be There" was top of the pops of 1973
No mention of Eurovision song contest.
Same year of 1974. Abba won it.
John Farrar never played guitar on stage during the Physical tour.
John Farrar didn't write the famous Guitar Solo that Steve Lukather Shreaded.
(That solo is probably the reason why Foreigner was stuck at #2 in America)
But during the 1982 Physical tour, there were 2 guitarist's were on stage with Liv shreading it up. There names are Buzz Feiten and Michael Landau. Not John Farrar
There were 2 stalkers.
They got the Stalker in the film (Michael Perry) right. He killed his relatives and was too mentally ill for the electric chair. But they really did forget to mention that other prick Ralph Nau who beat up his 8 year Autistic STEP brother to DEATH
Ralph Nau did try to hunt Olivia down in Australia. So if the Movie is showing getting protected in Australia then don't you think they could have mentioned other prick who was out to get Olivia?
Two of a Kind
Could have been mentioned more apart from a scipt. YES THE MOVIE DID SUCK BALLS But Twist of Fate was her last top 10 hit!
No mentions of Soul Kiss
That was the last TOP 40 song for Olivia and basically her last hit album.
The wedding was in 1984, Chloe born Jan 1986. Surly you could mention the album release.
Nothing about "The Rumour" or "A Mom for Christmas@''
Between the Birth of Chloe in 1986 and her Cancer diagnose of 1992. Olivia put out 2 albums, a greatest hits CD, made a TV special about Australia for the imperialist Bicentennial celebrations and filmed a TV Christmas movie in 1990.
The whole collapse of Koala Blue happened in 1991 before her cancer diagnosis, not sometime in the 80s.
As far as I know, someone actually asked Jimmy Degrasso from Suicidal Tendencies, Y&T & Megadeth to play drums for Olivia on that so called CEASARS PALACE
Olivia and Matt seperation
Didn't happen till 1995, not during the making of GAIA or her 1993 cancer remission.
Was recorded in 1993-94 and most of it written in 1992.
ONJ Cancer center
Didn't start building till the 00's
Come back to Country album of 1998.
No mention of that either. Think about a woman who ditched country music around 1978 and starts dabbling in it 20 years later.
Also total bullshit for using original scenes from the ending of Xanadu and the 2006 Olivia Opera house gig. I can spot Andy Timmons in an orchestra. So this production fails for not hiring someone like him or even having the balls to recreate this shit.
Delta did what she could to portray Olivia, but in no way was she even near Olivia
