I last went to a concert (or GIG) in Camden Town 6th of August 2015 when I saw Queensryche/Armoured Saint and Death Angel performing to an almost sellout crowd at the Electric Ballroom. It was on a day/night I would never forget as the Tube workers were all on strike.
Getting to this Metal Church gig had been pretty eventful. I had waked out of my shared house in Smethwick, Spent 2 nights at Birmingham Backpackers, I stayed with my Dads cousin Peter at Grange town.
So today I had to get on a bus to London at 7.40am, rush across London to Gravesend Kent so I could have some wild rub & tug with Beverly the Great Gilf before going back to Victoria, dumping my bag at the hostel and then going onto Camden town.
The first band of the night was Distillator. They are a new Thrash Band from Europe who are bringing back the sounds of 80’s Thrash to the 2010’s. They were a great band to watch but I feel like these days their artwork reminds me of RETRO THRASH BAND
Bliksem were really awesome, they reminded me of Lycanthia back home in Australia.
Meta Church walked on stage to open up with “Fake Healer” off the famous 3rd album “Blessing in Disguise”. Its about a bullshit spiritual guy who tried to heal people with Terminal illness but he also scams them.
“In Mourning” was up next. It was off “The Human Factor”. This was another Mike Howe lead album. John Marshall played guitar on this album instead of Kirk. But it was Kirk who did all the arrangements of this album
“Start the Fire” off the 2nd album off the 1986 album “The Dark”, Mike Howe really does justice to Wayne’s vocals.
It was time for some new material, so “RESET” was present off the new album XI. I can’t believe it Metal Church 11th record in like 32 years after the first.
“Gods of Second Chance” off 1993 “Hanging in the Balance”. After this album was released the band took a hiatus or break up for 4 years.
Date with Poverty: The band made a crazy video to this song back in 1991
No Tomorrow is a song of the new album XI. It breaths a new breath of fresh air into the band. People are happy that Metal Church are back in London after an absence of like 20 or so years.
“Watch the Children Pray” is a classic song off “The Dark” it was Metal Church’s first video
“No Friend of Mine” from “Hanging in the Balance”
“Killing your Time” A brand new song from “XI” It’s a really kick arse song.
“Beyond the Black” This I what I call Classic Heavy Metal. It came out a year when Thrash Metal was emerging.
On stage Tonight Mike Howe was back in Metal Church singing his heart out. Kirk was doing all the talking on stage as he is the founder of Metal Church, on Drums was Jeff Plate whom has played on Savatage “Edge of Thorns” LP as well as being behind the kit on Trans-Siberian Orchestra,
Steve Unger was on bass tonight. He has been playing on the last few Metal Church Albums. It was a surprise to see Chris Caffery on guitar. He is the legend whom has played on the last few Savatage records.
Badlands was a classic track off “Blessing in Disguise”. It had recently been rerecorded and re-released as Bandlands 2015.
Metal Church finished the night off with :The Human Factor” It was a great way to end the night for a band that I have hardly ever listened to, but from that day forward I would listen to allot more Metal Church than I have done before.
